Margaret is a ‘Christmas baby’ having been born on 25th December 2011.She was 6 or 7 months old when her parents noticed that something was wrong – Margaret didn’t react to any sounds. They took her to the local hospital and were told that she was deaf.No reason or treatment was given.
Since then Margaret has stayed at home as there are no local schools catering for children with disabilities or special needs.Luckily Magwero School for the Deaf has offered Margaret a place but sadly her parents, who are subsistence farmers, cannot afford the fees. Magwero Schools for the Deaf and Blind are in Chipata, a town over 120 km away and Natasha will have to board. At Magwero the classes are exceptionally small with 5 or 6 to a class and Margaret would initially spend time learning sign language.
We have several deaf children attending Magwero, some who were as young as Margaret when they started. Attending school and learning to sign has made a huge difference to them. Margaret’s father tells us that she is a clever girl who loves to play football and to spend time drawing.
