Evelyn comes from a very poor family where she is the youngest of 7 children.She is the first of her family, including her parents to have completed primary school and graduated to junior secondary level.
Because the family is poor some better off people in the village took Evelyn into their home to do cleaning and so on in return for her keep. This is not an unusual arrangement for children in Zambia, mostly for girls but sometimes also for boys. Sometimes it is relatives who take in these children and sometimes not. Whilst Evelyn’s home is just a few kilometres from Mfuwe Day Secondary School we would like her to board at the school so she has the chance to study after her lessons instead of doing housework, join her friends in study groups, have electricity so she can study in the evenings and eat three meals each day.
Evelyn attended Uyoba Community School until last year. She sat for her Certificate of Primary Education exams (known locally as the Grade 7 exams) and scored 686 points. Here are her results:
|Evelyn Mulenga||Grade 7|
|CTS / Civics||110||2|
|Gen Paper/ SP2||108||2|
|Marks & av %||893|
She has been offered a place at Mfuwe Day Secondary School and if she finds a sponsor to support her at this school will be able to join the Project Luangwa Girls’ Club. Girl’s clubs can help girls such Evelyn by encouraging them to stay in school, to increase their self-esteem, to stay safe and so much more.Our clubs are safe places where girls can express themselves and gain the support they need.
