In rural areas of the Eastern Province of Zambia less than 1% of pupils in grade 6 achieve numeral competence.
Children in most developing countries, including Zambia, experience difficulties with mathematics. The SAQMEC III survey revealed that only 24.5 % of Zambian children in grade 6 managed basic numeracy, whilst just 1.5% achieved competency. In the rural areas of the Eastern Province, especially if children were from poor families, the statistics were even worse at less than 1%. Basically Zambian had the worst results of all 19 countries surveyed.
Edulution is an e-learning system focusing on maths. Although sessions take place in school Edulution is extracurricular and run by young coaches rather than teachers. Using tablets the pupils can progress at their own pace and the results are quite remarkable often with a pupil improving by 48% over two or three terms. Gaining a basic understanding in primary school will help them later in secondary school and throughout life.
Project Luangwa is raising funds to help 1200 local children improve their math.
A donation of $120 will allow a pupil to attend Edulution classes for a whole year.
